ReCal™ Remineralization Description

The seawater product water has low pH or acidic, contains low buffering capacity, and has low alkalinity and  hardness (concentration of calcium and magnesium is very low). This low pH and low alkalinity and hardness  water may have undesirable consequences to the distribution system plumbing /pipe materials, downstream wastewater systems, and may not be favorable for drinking or irrigation purposes.

Post-treatment systems are designed  to adjust the final product’s minerals composition to accommodate water quality requirements.

For drinking water purposes, it is required to meet and adjust the physical & chemical parameters such as pH, TDS, Turbidity, Hardness,  Alkalinity and others in the final treatment process selected for post-treatment.

A commonly used operation in the remineralization process is to contact CO2 acidified desalinated water with a bed of domestic limestone. Limestone dissolution provides two essential ingredients to the water – bicarbonate alkalinity and calcium content:

CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O = Ca+2 + 2HCO3

Overall Purpose

  • Stabilization – Prevents corrosion of pipes by raising alkalinity and hardness
  • pH Adjustment – Brings RO permeate to a neutral or slightly alkaline range (pH 7–8).
  • Re-mineralization – Adds calcium and bicarbonate for taste and health (important in drinking water applications).
  • Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) Correction – Ensures water is slightly scale-forming rather than aggressive/corrosive.

Post-treatment processes typically include stabilization, disinfection and corrosion control, and can include degasification and/or air stripping processes. Four primary issues concerning the post-treatment water are blending, remineralization, disinfection and the materials used for storage.
