Extracting rare earth elements (REEs) from lithium brines or processing streams is an emerging opportunity because many lithium sources contain trace amounts of valuable REEs like scandium, yttrium, neodymium, and others.

Source of REEs in Lithium Brines

  • Some salar brines and geothermal brines contain dissolved REEs at low concentrations (ppm to ppb range).
  • REEs are often present as complex ions or bound with other minerals.
  • Extraction is challenging but promising due to increasing REE demand.
